Pope Leo XIV: A Historic American Papacy Begins

On May 8, 2025, history was made as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a Chicago native, was elected the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. He is the first American to ascend to the papacy, marking a significant moment for the Block Blast Game global Catholic community.

From Chicago to the Vatican

Born in 1955 in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV was raised in a devout Catholic family. He joined the Augustinian order and was ordained in 1982. His missionary work took him to Peru, where he served as a bishop and became a citizen. Later, he held significant roles within the Vatican, including prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops.

The discovery of Pope Leo XIV's Creole heritage has sparked celebrations in New Orleans. Genealogical research revealed that his maternal grandparents were from the city and identified as people of color. Locals affectionately refer to him as the "7th Ward Pope," expressing pride in this connection.
